Obverse description Forepart of a lion in high relief, facing right with head dramatically turned back to the left, mouth open in a snarl revealing teeth. The mane is rendered with fine, carefully engraved striations giving a naturalistic, layered texture characteristic of Chersonesian coinage. The forelegs are extended forward, the paws clearly delineated, conveying a sense of dynamic motion. The design is boldly struck and fills the flan, consistent with the accomplished die-cutting tradition of this Thracian Chersonese mint.
