| Reverse description | The nude, bearded figure of Silenus squats in three-quarter view facing right, his corpulent body rendered with expressive naturalism. He holds a kantharos (wine cup) aloft in his right hand and grasps a thyrsus or branch in his left, attributes emblematic of his Dionysiac nature. The partial legend ΝΑΞΙΩΝ appears in Greek characters to the left of the figure in the field, identifying the issuing city of Naxos. The scene is set on a plain exergual line, the whole contained within the irregular broad flan characteristic of Sicilian hemidrachms of this era. |
