Reverse description An eagle, the sacred bird of Zeus, depicted standing and facing left atop a hare or small quadruped, gripping its prey with outstretched talons in a dynamic predatory pose. The eagle's wings are partially raised, conveying tension and power, in a composition well-attested on Elean coinage of this period. The design fills the irregular, lightly hammered flan, with no exergual line or inscription. This eagle-and-prey type is a hallmark of coinage struck at Olympia in connection with the quadrennial Olympic games and the cult of Zeus Olympios.
