| Reverse description | A chelys-type lyre shown facing, with a rounded tortoiseshell resonator body, two lateral arms, and a crossbar from which seven strings descend, depicted in incuse relief within a shallow incuse square with a plain linear border. The instrument is rendered with careful attention to its structural details, including the row of tuning knobs along the crossbar, and occupies the full field of the incuse square. The lyre was the sacred attribute of Apollo and a civic emblem of Mytilene, home of the legendary poet Terpander. The surrounding flat field and linear square frame are characteristic of the Mytilene electrum series. |
