| Obverse description | Forepart of a bull advancing to left in archaic high relief, the musculature carefully rendered with engraved ribbing along the neck and flanks. The head is lowered, with a well-defined muzzle and clearly articulated eye. A zigzag line beneath the forequarters serves as a ground or water-line motif. The civic initial Μ (for Mytilene) appears in the left field, identifying the issuing city. The composition is characteristic of the finest early Lesbian electrum hekte production of the late sixth to early fifth century BC. |
