| Reverse description | Head of Herakles facing right, clad in the scalp of the Nemean lion worn as a headdress, its open jaws framing the hero's face; the neck is decorated with a pattern of small squares, evoking a beaded or linked ornament. The entire design is sunk within a deep square incuse punch, characteristic of early electrum coinage from the Lesbian cities. The modelling is bold and confident, reflecting the mature archaic style prevalent in the eastern Aegean during the early fifth century BC. |
