Additional information

Mytilene and Cyzicus dominated electrum coinage in the Aegean for centuries, but their production models differed sharply — Cyzicus struck a long-running stater series, while Mytilene committed to the hekte as its principal denomination, issuing new die pairs with unusual frequency. Bodenstedt 26 falls within the post-Persian War period, when Mytilene was navigating its position inside the Delian League while maintaining enough commercial independence to sustain a distinct coinage.

The natural electrum alloy used at Mytilene varied in gold content between issues, a fact Bodenstedt's die study documents in detail.
