| Obverse description | Bearded male head facing right, identified as Ares, wearing a crested Attic helmet adorned with the forepart of a griffin projecting from the bowl. The facial features are rendered with expressive archaic-to-early-classical naturalism, with a prominent beard rendered in fine relief. The crest of the helmet rises boldly above the head, its plumes finely striated. The type is characteristic of the Mytilene electrum series and exhibits the high artistic quality associated with the Lesbian mint. |
