| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned heraldic ermine shield of Brittany, surmounted by a royal crown rendered in Gothic style typical of the late 15th to early 16th century. The shield is flanked by elaborate floral or foliate decorative elements filling the field. A circular legend in uncial Latin characters surrounds the central device, reading LVDOVIC FR R BRITO DVX, identifying Louis XII as king of the Franks and duke of Brittany. The flan is irregular in shape, characteristic of hammered coinage of the period, with the legend partially visible depending on strike placement. |
