Obverse description A bear passant to the right occupies the central field, depicted in a bold, primitive relief characteristic of early sixteenth-century Swiss hammered coinage. The animal is shown with prominent claws and a raised forepaw, rendered within a plain raised circular border. The flat, irregular flan exhibits typical characteristics of hand-struck production. No legend is present on this face. The overall style is emblematic of Bern's heraldic bear, the city's longstanding civic symbol.
