Obverse description The arms of the town of Southwold occupy the central field, depicted as a heraldic shield bearing the municipal device. A circular legend in Roman capital letters reads 'E S * THE · ARMES · OF · SOVTHWOVLD', running around the periphery of the flan. The design is characteristic of mid-seventeenth-century English provincial trade tokens, with the lettering and armorial device struck in relatively high relief on a plain field. The initials 'E S' flanking the star ornament likely refer to the issuing authority or town officer.
