Obverse description The municipal arms of Zürich displayed on an ornate shield divided per pale, the dexter half plain white and the sinister half bearing diagonal stripes; the shield is set within an elaborate cartouche of interlaced Renaissance foliate and scroll ornament typical of early sixteenth-century Swiss civic coinage. The heraldic device occupies the central field in high relief, surrounded by a beaded or cable inner border. The overall composition reflects the refined engraving aesthetic of the early Reformation-era Swiss Confederation.
