Obverse description Duke Charles of Egmont depicted on horseback galloping to the right, raising a sword aloft in his right hand; the horse is shown in full stride with flowing mane and tail rendered in the Gothic style typical of late medieval Flemish coinage. The ducal arms appear on the horse's caparison. The abbreviation GEL appears in the exergue below the horse. A beaded inner circle separates the central field from the surrounding Latin legend, which is punctuated by fleur-de-lis ornaments.
