Reverse description The reverse depicts a standing female figure representing the Maid of Holland (Nederland), shown in flowing classical drapery, facing left. She holds a spear or staff upright in her right hand and rests her left hand on a column or altar, upon which a hat of liberty or crown is placed. The circular legend HAC NITIMVR HANC TVEMVR, translating as 'On her we lean, her we protect', runs around the periphery in Latin capital letters. The design is rendered in the baroque style characteristic of late seventeenth-century Dutch provincial coinage, with fine drapery detail visible despite the limitations of the hammered technique. The flan is slightly irregular, consistent with hand-struck silver coinage of the period.
