| Obverse description | Central quartered heraldic shield displaying the arms of Navarre and Aragon, surmounted by an open royal crown with fleurs-de-lis and trefoil finials. The shield is set within a beaded inner circle, with the circular Latin legend running along the outer border. The design is executed in the late Gothic style typical of Navarrese hammered coinage of the mid-fifteenth century. |

Juan II ruled Navarre in an increasingly nominal capacity through the mid-fifteenth century, a period defined by the Navarrese Civil War between his faction and that of his son Carlos de Viana — a conflict that consumed the kingdom from 1451 onward and left royal finances in chronic disorder. Billon coinage of this reign reflects that instability directly: debasement was not a policy so much as a necessity, with silver content dropping as the treasury struggled to fund a war fought against the king's own heir.
Carlos died in 1461 under circumstances suspicious enough to spark riots across the Crown of Aragon.
