| Reverse description | Saint George on horseback shown in right-facing profile, clad in armour and wearing a plumed helmet, thrusting a lance downward toward a dragon prostrate beneath the horse's hooves. The composition is vigorous and typical of Counter-Reformation devotional imagery on papal provincial coinage. In the lower field, the mint officials' initials A·B· (for Agostino Bellegrandi and his associate) appear between decorative stops. The date 1624 is placed to the left of the mounted figure within the legend, which reads + S · GEORGIVS · FERRARIAE · PROT · identifying Saint George as protector of Ferrara. |
