| Obverse description | Central field displays the papal emblems: the crossed keys of Saint Peter surmounted by the papal tiara, rendered in a bold, somewhat crude hammered style typical of early seventeenth-century Italian coinage. The keys are depicted saltire-wise, bound with a cord, with the triple crown rising above. A circular legend surrounds the central device, reading GREGORIVS XV P M, identifying Pope Gregory XV as the issuing authority. The legend is composed in capital Latin letters, interrupted by small decorative stars or crosses acting as word dividers. The overall flan is irregular and slightly convex, consistent with hand-struck silver coinage of the period. |
