Reverse description Half bust of Saint Ambrose, patron saint of Milan, facing the viewer, depicted in episcopal vestments with a rosette ornament on his chest. The saint holds a crozier in his right hand and a scourge (whip) in his left, the latter being a traditional attribute identifying him as defender of the Milanese church. The figure is rendered in a stylized late-Gothic manner characteristic of Milanese coinage of the mid-fifteenth century. A circular legend in uncial script naming the saint and the city of Milan encircles the bust within a beaded border.
