| Reverse description | A bold cross fleurdelisée occupies the central field, its four arms terminating in stylized fleur-de-lis ornaments, creating a quadripartite design of elegant heraldic character. The date digits are placed in the angles between the arms of the cross, reading 1-6-1-3 in the four quarters. The design is contained within a plain circular border, with no additional legend present. |

Ferdinand of Gonzaga governed Montferrat as an absentee lord for much of his rule, administering the marquisate from Mantua while it remained a strategically contested buffer between Savoy and Spanish Milan. The small billon coinage of this period reflects the fiscal constraints of a minor Italian state perpetually threatened by larger neighbors — Savoy would seize Montferrat outright in 1613, triggering the War of Monferrato, and the territory changed hands under Spanish mediation before Ferdinand could consolidate control.
MIR 337 is among the more obscure issues of his reign, with surviving examples typically showing uneven billon surfaces from inconsistent alloy preparation at the Casale mint.
