Obverse description Armored equestrian figure of Ercole I d'Este, Duke of Ferrara, depicted in right profile at full gallop, the Duke brandishing a scepter aloft in his raised right hand. The horse is shown in dynamic motion with forelegs raised, rendered in the vigorous late-medieval Italian style characteristic of Este coinage. The circumferential Latin legend surrounds the central field, identifying the ruler by title.
