Obverse description A lion passant to left occupies the central field, depicted in a bold, stylized medieval manner with clearly rendered mane and musculature. Above the lion's back appears a shield bearing the Angevin arms, serving as a heraldic identifier of Charles I of Anjou. The entire design is enclosed within a beaded inner circle, with the circular legend running between the inner and outer borders. The overall composition is characteristic of the Roman senatorial coinage workshop of the late 13th century.

Reverse description The enthroned figure of Roma is depicted facing, seated frontally upon a high-backed throne in the hieratic Byzantine-influenced style common to Roman senatorial grossi of the period. She holds a globus cruciger in her right hand and a palm frond in her left, both attributes of imperial and civic authority. The figure is crowned and rendered with stylized drapery, framed within a beaded inner circle. The circular legend surrounds the central device between the inner beaded border and the outer rim, proclaiming Rome's supremacy.
