Obverse description Central field displays the heraldic shield of Cleves, bearing a parti-colored escutcheon decorated with crosslets and fleurs-de-lis in the Gothic armorial tradition, set within a beaded inner circle. The shield is rendered in low relief characteristic of hammered medieval coinage. Surrounding the inner circle is the circumferential legend reading + IOHANNES DVX CLIVENSIS, identifying the issuer as John, Duke of Cleves, rendered in uncial Latin script. The overall design is enclosed within an outer beaded border, consistent with mid-fourteenth-century Rhenish minting practice.
