| Obverse description | Central field displays a floriated cross pattée with trefoil terminals, surmounted by a crown at the top arm, the whole set within a beaded inner circle. The four quadrants formed by the cross arms are each ornamented with small decorative elements. A circular Latin legend in Gothic uncial characters surrounds the central device, reading KAROLLVS DEI GRA, invoking the issuer's name and divine grace. The entire design is characteristic of mid-14th-century Breton hammered billon coinage, with bold relief and irregular flan typical of the period. |
