Obverse description Cruciform design with a cross pattée dividing the field into four quarters, the Basel civic shield superimposed at center bearing the characteristic black diagonal staff (Baselstab) on a white field. The date 1521 is displayed in two digits on either side of the upper arm of the cross. A beaded inner circle frames the design, with the abbreviated Latin monetary legend disposed in the four quarters of the cross.

Reverse description Full-length frontal figure of the Virgin Mary, crowned and nimbed, standing and holding the Christ Child before her in her left arm; the Child raises his right hand in benediction. Both figures are rendered in a Gothic style within a beaded inner circle, with the abbreviated invocatory legend distributed around the periphery between beaded borders.
