Reverse description A full-length frontal figure of the Virgin Mary, crowned and nimbed, stands in flowing Gothic drapery holding the Christ Child against her left side. The composition is rendered in the late-Gothic manner typical of Rhenish-influenced Swiss goldgulden of the period. A Latin legend encircling the figure within a beaded border references Pope Julius II as Pontifex Maximus, reflecting the papal authorization of the coin's gold standard. The flan is slightly irregular, consistent with hand-hammered production of the era.
