Obverse description Bare-headed bust of Sir Isaac Newton in high relief facing left, with the engraver's signature visible below the truncation. The circular legend around the rim reads ROYAL ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY INST. MDCCCXX, with NEWTON inscribed vertically to the right of the bust. The motto NUBEM PELLENTE MATHESI appears along the lower border.

Reverse description A detailed depiction in relief of Sir William Herschel's 40-foot reflecting telescope, shown mounted on its large wooden scaffolding framework with ladders, set against a landscape ground line.
