Obverse description The field is dominated by a large nine-fold quartered shield of arms of Lorraine, displaying the combined heraldic devices of the duchy's constituent territories, including bars, fleurs-de-lis, an eagle, and a lion, arranged in a bold and detailed composition characteristic of early seventeenth-century hammered coinage. The shield fills virtually the entire field, bordered by a beaded inner circle. A circular Latin legend surrounds the shield, interrupted by a patriarchal cross at the top.
