Obverse description Central field displays the heraldic shield of Metz, set within a fleur-de-lis polylobed frame that is itself enclosed within a hexalobed border, the angles of which are filled by a ringlet ornament. The composition is tightly contained and symmetrically arranged, reflecting the Gothic decorative tradition common to municipal coinage of the period. The circumferential legend runs continuously around the outer border.
