Obverse description Crowned facing bust of Queen Joanna I within a beaded inner circle, her effigy depicted in Gothic style with a fleurs-de-lis-adorned crown and draped shoulders. Below the bust, two crossed fleurs-de-lis branches are visible in the lower field, evoking the heraldic emblems of her Angevin titles. The legend, struck in uncial Latin characters, reads along the outer margin beginning with a cross pattée: IOH`N IhR ET SIC REG, identifying her as Queen of Jerusalem and Sicily. The entire design is enclosed between the beaded inner circle and the irregular flan edge, characteristic of 14th-century hammered gold coinage.
