Obverse description At center, the crowned French royal shield (écu de France) bearing three fleurs-de-lis arranged 2-1, surmounted by a large royal crown with elaborate finials. A radiant sun device appears above the crown, giving the type its name 'écu au soleil.' The mint mark appears below the shield in the lower field. The entire design is encircled by a beaded inner border, with the legend distributed around the outer margin.
