Obverse description Central field features the royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — surmounted by a large royal crown with fleurons and arched bands. The shield is flanked by plain fields, with the mint mark positioned below. A circular Latin legend surrounds the design, interrupted at the top by a stylized sun or mullet privy mark. The coin is struck on an irregular flan typical of hammered gold coinage of the period, with bold, well-centred relief.
