| Obverse description | Central field displays the crowned royal arms of France — a shield semé of fleurs-de-lis — surmounted by a large royal crown with a cross at its apex. The shield is rendered in high relief in the Gothic heraldic style typical of late Valois coinage. A small sun or mint mark appears below the shield, giving this series its name. The surrounding legend, separated from the inner field by a beaded border, reads KAROLVS DEI GRA FRANCORVM REX in Gothic uncial lettering, identifying the issuer as Charles, by the grace of God, King of the Franks. |
