Obverse description Central field dominated by the papal arms of Pope Pius IV (Giovanni Angelo de' Medici), displaying the Medici shield charged with six roundels (palle) set within an ornate cartouche surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter. To the left of the shield, a small escutcheon bearing the arms of the Comtat Venaissin is visible. The circumferential Latin legend reads PIVS · IIII · PON · OP · MAX, with the date 1562 inscribed vertically to the left of the shield in the field. The overall style is characteristic of mid-sixteenth century Italian hammered coinage, with bold, deeply struck relief.
