Obverse description Central field displays a heraldic shield semé-de-lis (strewn with fleurs-de-lis), representing the royal arms of France, set within an elaborate Gothic quatrefoil frame with trefoil finials at each lobe. The shield is rendered in high relief with bold, finely detailed fleurs-de-lis in the ancient French style (semé, without a defined number). A Latin legend in Gothic lettering encircles the entire design along the outer border, reading: LVDOVICVS DEI GRACIA FRANCORVM REX.
