Louis II inherited the County of Provence in 1384 at age seven, with his mother Marie de Blois acting as regent through the most turbulent years of his minority. His claim to the throne of Naples — inherited from his father Louis I, who died on campaign in 1384 — consumed the family's finances and political attention for decades. The Provençal mint at Tarascon operated intermittently across this long reign, which accounts for the wide stylistic variation collectors encounter within this type.
