Obverse description Edward of Woodstock, the Black Prince, depicted enthroned in full regalia within an elaborate Gothic architectural canopy adorned with pointed arches and foliate pinnacles. The Prince is shown facing forward, crowned and wearing armour over a long robe, holding a sceptre in his right hand and resting his left hand on his knee. The throne is richly ornamented with Gothic tracery and flanked by heraldic supports. A beaded inner circle frames the central design, with the Latin legend distributed around the outer field between beaded borders. The overall treatment is characteristic of the refined Gothique style of mid-fourteenth-century French royal coinage.
