Obverse description The obverse displays the Latin inscription 'TIN' — an abbreviation for the issuing ruler Tincomarus — contained within a raised rectangular tablet or panel occupying the upper portion of the flan. The lettering is rendered in bold, deeply struck characters in the native Celtic epigraphic style, with the lower field left plain and slightly concave. The overall design is stark and typologically significant as one of the earliest uses of a Romanised royal name on British Celtic coinage, reflecting the strong Roman cultural influence on the Atrebatic dynasty.
