Verica ruled the Atrebates in the decade or so before the Claudian invasion of 43 AD, and his coins are among the last produced by a British tribal king operating under Roman diplomatic influence — he had received recognition from Augustus or Tiberius and styled himself REX on some issues. His eventual expulsion by the Catuvellauni under Caratacus is, according to Suetonius, one of the proximate triggers Claudius cited to justify the invasion.
The VIR abbreviation on this quarter stater is a shortened form of VIIRIC or VIRIC, Verica's name as it appears across his coinage in various truncations. Sills 370 places this among the later die groupings of his reign.
