Gallspach is a small Upper Austrian market town with no particular monetary significance — which makes its Notgeld series, like most Austrian municipal issues of 1920, a product of coin shortages rather than local banking infrastructure. The postwar metal shortage was acute enough that hundreds of Austrian municipalities issued their own small-denomination emergency paper, often with limited runs and heavy local flavor in the artwork.
