Obverse description Central field contains the Islamic profession of faith (Shahada) arranged in three horizontal lines of Kufic Arabic script: 'There is no god but God, alone, without partner; Muhammad is the Messenger of God.' The surrounding marginal legend, running continuously around the inner border, bears the Quranic verse (9:33): 'He sent him with guidance and the religion of truth to make it prevail over all religions, even if the polytheists abhor it.' The die is struck on a small, irregularly shaped flan characteristic of fractional gold coinage, with the fields showing the bold, angular Kufic letterforms typical of early Saffarid mint production.
