| Obverse description | Right-facing draped and cuirassed bust of Emperor Valentinian I, adorned with a pearl diadem, the strands of which are visible behind the head. The imperial effigy is rendered in the characteristic late Roman style, with a strong, idealised portrait. The obverse legend encircles the bust, reading DN VALENTINIANVS PF AVG. |

| Additional information |
Valentinian I came to power in 364 AD through military acclamation following the sudden death of Jovian, and almost immediately split the empire with his brother Valens — Valentinian taking the West, Valens the East. The Thessalonica mint fell under Valens's administrative sphere, making issues struck there during Valentinian's reign a product of the co-emperorship arrangement rather than direct western authority. RIC IX 26a places this piece among the SMTES and SMTESA officina outputs of that mint.
