Obverse description Frontal crowned bust of Emperor Romanos I Lekapenos, rendered in the hieratic Byzantine style, wearing the imperial chlamys fastened at the right shoulder. The emperor holds a transverse labarum staff surmounted by a Christogram in his right hand and a cruciger globus in his left, both symbols of imperial and divine authority. The effigy is executed in low relief typical of late Macedonian-era anonymous folles, with a flat, stylised facial treatment. A circular legend in Greek majuscules surrounds the bust, identifying the emperor by name and title.
