Obverse description Frontal bearded bust of Emperor Nikephoros II Phokas, depicted in full imperial regalia: crowned with a jewelled stemma surmounted by a cross and adorned with pendilia hanging to either side, and wearing the imperial loros. The emperor holds a cruciform sceptre in his right hand and a globus cruciger terminating in a trefoil ornament in his left. A partial Greek legend identifying the emperor flanks the bust in the field.
