Obverse description The Virgin Mary (Madonna) depicted seated facing, wearing an open crown, holding the Christ Child in her right arm. A crescent appears beneath the figure, with a rosette ornament flanking each side of the central device. The design is rendered in the late Gothic style typical of Hungarian royal gold coinage of the early sixteenth century, with the Madonna's throne-like posture emphasizing her role as patroness of Hungary (Patrona Hungariae). The circular legend surrounds the central device.
