Obverse description The obverse depicts the enthroned Madonna and Child (Madonna of Hungary), shown facing forward in a frontal composition typical of Hungarian gold florins of the period. The Virgin Mary is seated, holding the Christ Child on her lap, both figures rendered in a stylized Gothic manner within the coin's field. A small shield bearing the arms of Hungary appears at the base of the throne. The surrounding legend, in Latin, reads IOHANNES D·G·R·VNGA, identifying János (John Zápolya) as King of Hungary by the grace of God.
