| Obverse description |
Bare-headed effigy of King Edward VIII facing right, modelled in high relief after Percy Metcalfe's original 1936 portrait design, with the engraver's initials 'P.M.' incuse below the truncation. The king is depicted with short, neatly combed hair and a clean-shaven face, rendered in a restrained, modernist style characteristic of the inter-war period. The circular Latin legend reads EDWARDVS VIII D: G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: MCMXXXVI, separated by raised dots, running along the inner border of the coin. The field is deeply mirrored with a polished proof-like finish, accentuating the fine detail of the portrait. A continuous beaded border frames the design at the rim. |

| Reverse description |
Central design features a large, ornate St. Edward's Crown rendered in fine relief, surrounded by a symmetrical wreath composed of the national floral emblems of the United Kingdom: Tudor roses for England, thistles for Scotland, and shamrocks for Ireland, interspersed with oak leaves. The date 1936 appears on either side of the crown within the wreath. The word TRIAL is inscribed in small letters at the lower left of the wreath interior. The circular legend, separated by lozenge stops, reads FID · DEF · IND · IMP · around the upper field and EDW. VIII · around the lower field. A beaded border runs along the entire rim, and the highly polished steel fields give the reverse a deeply contrasting proof appearance. |
