Fanning Island — formally Tabuaeran — is a coral atoll in the northern Line Islands administered by Kiribati, best known historically as a cable relay station on the British trans-Pacific telegraph route established in 1902. It has never issued its own coinage. This piece is a modern fantasy issue with no governmental authorization, produced to satisfy collector demand for exotic Pacific toponym items rather than to fulfill any monetary function.
