Reverse description Aniconic reverse field displaying a multi-line Arabic inscription arranged within an inner circular border. The central legend bears the second part of the shahada attesting to the prophethood of Muhammad, while the marginal legend records the mint formula in the name of Allah, identifying the place of striking as al-Jazira. The hammered flan exhibits characteristic surface porosity and irregular edges consistent with early Abbasid copper fals production, with robust, upright Kufic script throughout.

Additional information

Al-Abbas ibn Muhammad was a younger brother of the first two Abbasid caliphs, al-Saffah and al-Mansur, and served as governor of the Jazira region during precisely this period. Copper fulus issued in the names of provincial governors rather than the reigning caliph are characteristic of the early Abbasid decades, when the new dynasty was still consolidating administrative control over a vast and recently conquered territory. The practice would become less common as central authority tightened under al-Mansur's long reign.
