Reverse description The reverse displays a schematically rendered elephant in profile, occupying the central field in low hammered relief, consistent with the iconographic repertoire of early Umayyad fulus struck at Hims (Emesa). The animal is depicted with a rounded body, four stubby legs, and a suggestion of the head and trunk, rendered in the crude but vigorous style typical of this series. Flanking elements or partial inscriptions may appear at the margins of the flan, though the irregular striking has obscured much of the peripheral detail. The elephant motif on Syrian Umayyad fulus is considered a holdover from pre-Islamic numismatic or administrative traditions of the region. The flan is broad and flat with a characteristic olive-green patina.
