Obverse description Crude hammered copper fals with heavily patinated surfaces in dark brown and green tones. The central field displays the name of the sultan in large, boldly struck Arabic script reading 'Jaqmaq' (جقمق), rendered in a characteristic Mamluk angular style. The legends fill the irregularly shaped flan, typical of low-denomination Mamluk copper coinage of the mid-fifteenth century. The die-work is rough, consistent with the utilitarian nature of fals production under al-Zahir Jaqmaq.
